Safeguarding

Staying Safe in the Church Community

The Parochial Church Councils (PCC) of both Churches take very seriously the matters of health and safety, safeguarding and data protection.   See the separate page in this section regarding Privacy and Data Protection.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St Mary, Haxby and The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St Nicholas, Wigginton confirm that they comply with their duties under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have due regard to the House of Bishop's guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults).  They continue to respond to the requirements of national and diocesan safeguarding policies.

Promoting a safer church

Both parishes in the benefice have adopted a Safeguarding Policy, signed copies of which are on display in each respective church.   Details of this policy can be found on the separate Safeguarding Policy page of this site.

Contact details of parish, diocesan, local and national safeguarding representatives are also on display.

Safeguarding is the responsibility of all church members, and it is everybody’s responsibility to keep themselves safe.  Some things can make us worry.  When we don’t feel as safe as we would like, it’s good to talk.   At St Mary’s and St Nicholas’ churches there are several adults who have an extra responsibility to keep children, young people and adults a bit safer.

Safeguarding Policies

As a benefice we are committed to the safety of all our members and take safeguarding seriously. In accordance with the Church of England Safeguarding Policy and Guidance our churches are committed to

Valuing all children (anyone under the age of 18 years) and all adults as equal partners in the life and ministry of the church.

Encouraging everyone to explore, discover and live out the Christian Gospel.

Promoting a safer environment and culture.

Safely recruiting and supporting all those with any responsibility related to children, young people and vulnerable adults within the church.

Responding promptly to every safeguarding concern.

Caring pastorally for victims/survivors of abuse and other affected persons.

Caring pastorally for those who are the subject of concerns or allegations of abuse and other affected persons.

Responding to those that may pose a present risk to others.

This is a shared responsibility of all church members.

Our respective Parish Safeguarding Policies have been updated in line with new Church of England guidance (Promoting Safer Church) and the Diocesan guidance (Parish Safeguarding Handbook).
