Mothers' Union

HAXBY AND WIGGINTON BRANCH OF THE MOTHERS’ UNION

The Mothers’ Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, a clergyman’s wife in Alresford, Hampshire to support the mothers in her parish.  Today it is world-wide organisation with four million members in 83 countries and. still works to support children and families around the world, through prayer and practical help.  Locally, the Mothers’ Union owns and maintains a caravan at Filey for families who would not otherwise be able to have a holiday.  Follow this link www.themothersunion.org  to find out more about the work of the Mothers’ Union nationally and internationally.

Men are now admitted as members (Archbishop John Sentamu is a member) and youth is no barrier, either. “Our members are not all mothers, or even all women. Single, married, parents, grandparents, or young adults just beginning to express their social conscience. For all four million members what Mothers' Union provides is a network through which they can serve Christ in their own community - through prayer, financial support and actively working at the grassroots level in programmes that meet local needs.” (From the MU website)

The Haxby and Wigginton branch of the Mothers’ Union meets on the third Wednesday of each month in St. Mary’s Church hall, Haxby at 2.15 p.m. with a varied programme of speakers and activities.  Our corporate Communion is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s, Haxby.  New members are always welcome.
